One of the things I like about internet marketing is that it’s a lot of fun. It really is. I have a blast learning all kinds of new stuff each day, and it’s a joy to be able to act like a juvenille whenever I feel like it.
Having fun in sales is a mandatory for me. The more fun I have, the more money I make. It’s not really a tough formula.
The other night I was watching the Chopper Show on the A & E Channel. The Chopper Show is a reality TV show that takes place in a automobile dealership in Las Vegas. The owner, and host of the show “Chop” pulls all kind of outrageous stunts to sell his cars on his TV Show.
Almost 10 years ago, when Chop was assistant used car manager at Towbin Infiniti in Las Vegas, he was asked to do a TV show selling cars. He didn’t want to do it because he thought it would be boring and his friends would make fun of him. But after thinking about it, he made a deal to do the show only if he can make it fun and so The Chopper Show was born.
The Saturday the show aired was the best Saturday in history for that store. And through the years the crazier Chop & the characters in the show acted, the more cars they sold. “I guess we are stuck acting like nuts,†Chop said.
Chop does act like a nut. It’s hillarious. He’s got this little Blue Genie Guy running all around acting like an idiot and a cast of other characters that help sell the cars.
It’s the most sophmoric, dumb and dumber type car salesman shit you’ll ever see. And guess what?
IT WORKS
Outrageous stuff gets attention. When your marketing to people, you have to get them to stop and check out whatever the heck your offering. If you try to fill up your whole page with a bunch of hype driven copywriting, and typical marketing, chances are you might not do so hot.
Put up a web page about a dude who wears a Watermelon for helmet and I guarantee you it will get attention. In fact that’s not a bad idea for this gardening sales letter I was asked to critique last week.
The point of this post is, don’t be afraid to get totally stupid and ridiculous with your marketing. People love to laugh. If your market can handle some sarcasm and humor, give it a shot. Go Wild, Get Crazy, and pretend like your in 8th grade again.
There’s nothing better then a bit of fun.

Yes… I watched this show premiere. As someone who’s got a background in selling cars, there’s no doubt in my mind why this guy is the #1 Dodge dealership in the country. He’s doing something different – making buying a car fun (i.e. getting to put your salesman in the dunk tank) – that all the other, old-school dealships aren’t doing.
Plus, the A&E show is bringing him even more attention.
Nice.
Being down under I’ve never seen the show, but you’re right on the money. If you can’t have fun doing something then what’s the point? I think you should start your own net-based show starring your puppets. Like the dog puppet who’s name I can’t remember. The puppets could show up at Internet Marketing seminars and ‘interview’ the speakers. You’d get some great content and get yourself out there at the same time.
