Why It’s Your Spiritual Duty to Get Rich (Yep, I Said It)
Let’s get this out of the way…
A lot of people are real uncomfortable with the idea of getting rich. They’ll throw words around like “greedy,” “selfish,” or my personal favorite, “unspiritual.”
You ever hear stuff like…
“Money is the root of all evil.”
“Rich people are corrupt.”
“You should just be happy with what you’ve got.”
Yeah… me too.
For years, I carried that programming around like a weighted backpack. Wanting more felt wrong. Like I was being ungrateful. Like I was cheating on gratitude with ambition.
But then I stumbled onto a book that flipped the whole thing on its head...
The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles.
It’s over a hundred years old, but it hit harder than half the modern “manifestation” fluff floating around Instagram.
And right there in Chapter 1, Wattles drops this line:
“Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich.”
Whoa. That hit like a truth bomb with a side of liberation. Because here’s the thing: wanting more isn’t a sin. It’s a signal.
A signal that life. with all its infinite creativity and intelligence., wants to express more of itself through you.
Rich Isn’t Just About Money. It’s About Expansion
Let’s be real: this isn’t about stacking Benjamins just to flex on your neighbors.
Being rich isn’t about private jets, Rolexes, or driving a Lambo down the PCH (unless you’re into that, no judgment).
It’s about freedom and options. It’s about giving yourself the resources to live a fully expressed life, mentally, physically, spiritually.
Can you write your best book, serve your community, or build a business that changes lives… when you're worried about rent? Can you show up for your family or your health if you’re constantly drained by stress and scarcity?
Exactly.
That’s the heart of what Wattles is saying: being broke serves no one. There’s no virtue in struggle. No nobility in playing small.
We’re not here to just “get by.” We’re here to grow. And that growth? It requires resources.
The Universe Wants You to Be Rich

Now, this is where Wattles goes full throttle and I’m with him on this one. He doesn’t just say getting rich is okay. He says it’s right. Not because it feeds your ego. But because it fuels your purpose.
According to Wattles, the Creator, God, the Universe, Source, or whatever language fits your worldview, actually wants you to be rich.
Why?
So you can be more.
So you can give more.
So you can live more.
Getting rich isn’t selfish. It’s alignment.
The same way a tree reaches for the sun… the same way a child learns to walk… you’re meant to grow.

Trying to suppress that natural desire? That’s not humility.
That’s spiritual suffocation.
Stop Apologizing for Wanting More
We’ve all picked up money baggage.
Little one-liners from childhood like:
- “Money doesn’t grow on trees.”
- “Don’t get your hopes up.”
- “You should just be grateful.”
But here’s the truth…
You can be deeply grateful for what you have, and still desire more. They’re not opposites., they’re partners in expansion. And you don’t have to apologize for dreaming big. You don’t have to feel guilty for wanting wealth, abundance, impact, joy, or anything else this life has to offer.
In fact, I’d argue, like Wattles does, that you have a moral obligation to claim it. Because the more you have, the more you can contribute. And the world needs your contribution.
So... What Now?
If something stirred in you while reading this, good.
Here’s your next step:
1. Get clear on what a rich life looks like for you.
Not just the money, although, yes, include the money. But also the experiences, the relationships, the freedom, the feeling of being fully alive and unburdened.
2. Write down all your old money beliefs.
Every weird, limiting, guilt-soaked story you picked up over the years. Write ’em down. Call them out.
3. Cross out the ones that no longer serve you.
Seriously. Get a red pen and X that junk out. Time to let go.
4. Say this every day for the next 7 days:
“I have a right to be rich.”
Say it like you believe it. And if you don’t believe it yet, say it until you do.
