I have not done a podcast in quite a while, so I thought I’d chime in with one right now in response to the feedback about MLM’s.

  1. Good podcast.

    Essentially, I agree with most of what you said. The 5% is very real, both in general business as well as in MLM.

    However, examine the 5% in both and measure the character and integrity of the individuals that comprise those numbers. I think that you will find that most in general business made it to the top through creativity, honest hard work and good entrepreneurship. In MLM, it’s pretty much a different story. While there are a few examples of honest hard work and entrepreneurship, most successful MLM individuals have had to compromise their ethics and integrity somewhere along the line to achieve their success. That is one reason that the uplines tend to band together and reinforce and rationalize what they are doing. Also, MLM’s tend to be a magnet for the unscrupulous because it enables and protects their predatory behavior.

  2. Totally on target when it comes to good products. Unfortunately many MLMers could care less and get jaded by dollars, and it shows.

    Also, being that it takes some busting hump before you see good returns, many get discouraged. Most payouts are not instant front end gratification.

    Great analogy about 95%

    I’ve stayed away from MLM for quite some time, curious to see what your up to.

  3. Nice podcast!

    I’ve been involved in an MLM for a while now. Because of the products, because of the comp plan that makes me take the correct actions which is to help individuals in my downline to be successfull … because that’s how I then get financially revarded also in the long run (so not having to chase new recruits all the time), because it forces me to grow beyond my limits and step up to use my skills and provide the help and training you also mentionned in your podcast.

    And yes, the internet is a unique tool to find, communicate and train those partners, particularely videos! Because even with the internet: MLM is first a peoples business build on relationships … and video certaily does a great job supporting us in this task.

    One of the most honest exponents of MLM done right to me is Tim Sales. His motto: “There’s no real business if it isn’t about making someone elses life better.” (well, that’s out of my head …)

    If you study “First-Class MLM” closely I believe you will agree that there isn’t a more ethical business model on Earth. A person who is doing First-Class MLM would follow these basic guidelines:

    1. They would tell the truth

    2. They would only represent a company that has products or services that honestly makes people’s lives better.

    3. They would be genuinely interested in a prospect’s success with their product or service – not just in making a profit.

    4. They would know the company’s product line and how it differs from similar products. This makes you valuable to consumers.

    5. They would be able to get customers and have not less than 20.

    6. They would know the MLM industry and be able to explain it simply and without hype.

    7. They would know their MLM company and be able to explain it simply and without hype.

    8. They would effectively train people they sponsored to sell the product/service. The true test of training is,“Can they do it after their training?”

    9. They would effectively train people they sponsored to recruit other distributors.

    10. They would ensure the people they sponsored could train their downline effectively.

    11. They would not sponsor anyone unless they were willing to train them.

    12. They would do what they promise.

    13. They would only take part in activities that reflect well on the whole of the MLM industry.

    14. They would make valuable suggestions to their company so the product line is the very best it can be.

    That might sound a bit hypothetical and an illusion … but how many internet marketers could subscribe to these business principles?

    Pretty good podcast even though I can do without the cursing but hey that’s your style. As you alluded too the key is really integrating the “Internet” with Network Marketing-including building people and having good products.

    Jason is right, we are all in a pyramid-look no further than our jobs. Curiosity has me bugged to see which MLM company he’s excited about. Hit me up man!

  5. Hey Jason,

    When I first started copywriting, I was very skeptical of MLM. Since them, I’ve been priveleged to write for some MLM’s that I would wholeheartedly recommend to others.

    I remember hearing BKV say awhile back that he refused to write copy for anything that isn’t a blessing for the prospect. The same holds through for MLM. If you can see that the product is a blessing to your customers, whether or not they join the opportunity side, then there’s no reason you should feel ashamed of promoting it.

    MLM doesn’t really fit my personality, but I know folks who do well with it and represent great products.

    I don’t mind the cursing. I’m into being real.

    The share market today was something to curse about wasn’t it? mutter…mutter….

    Also I found your comedian mate funny too. Although I’ve learnt not to sit up in the front seats where there is a possibility of getting “roasted”.

    About MLM.

    Years ago when I did MLM, I had no experience in selling and didn’t know about closing at all.

    So it was a battle for me then, which left a lingering bad taste in my mouth.

    Since then I’ve had 15yrs in sales and have learnt to close sales on the first visit, with relative ease.

    But I still would not like to pursue the traditional style MLM again.

    However some parts of the MLM concept are very interesting and I’m curios about how you will apply it to the net.

    I wonder how many of the 71 commenter’s had actually done MLM?, how long they were doing it? and are they still doing it now?

    That would qualify some of their statements. lol

    I suspect the thought of the staggering profit multiplication potential can cause a release of endorphin’s and dopamine into the brain and it can only be cured by actually having go at doing it.

    Having said that… damn, I’m starting to feel quite good now myself.

    Ooops what am I saying. lol

  7. Just listened to the podcast. Yup, you’re exactly right. I know a lot of people making some crazy incomes in MLM. some old way, but more using internet marketing techniques and social media to build relationships and build their teams.

    It’s all about the system.
