17 Year Old Kid Makes His First Few Thousand Dollars Selling His Website Online

By Jason Moffatt

December 17, 2006

Hey there troopers,

Have you ever thought of selling one of your websites? Ok, let me ask you a better question…

“Have you ever thought of selling one of your websites for LOTS OF CASH”!

Well I just got of the phone with one of my copywriting pals, and he mentioned to me that one of his students (whom happens to be only 17) just recently sold his website for a few thousand dollars. I’m not positive the exact figures, but apparently it was more money then the guy had ever made online before.

I guess the guy was thrilled with the quick and easy CASH INJECTION. Heck, at 17 years old I’d be stoked to get just $1500 in one lump sum.

Hopefully the kid is smart and leverages that chunk he made into building some more websites that he can SELL TOO!

Or, to make it even easier, he could be even smarter and…

BUY SOME MORE SITES TO SELL!

My buddy Ed Dale has hit the nail on the head when it comes to buying and selling websites, and he’s not using just a plain old hammer. Ed’s skills in buying and selling websites is unmatched in the internet marketing community.

And luckily for anyone interested, Ed is…

“Dropping The Sledge-Hammer On The Buying And Selling Myths, And Will Show You How To Buy and Sell Websites For Deals That Would Make Most Wise Investors Piss In Their Business Slacks””

When you hear what Ed is up to with buying and selling websites, it will baffle you. I don’t think people really understand just how damn savvy Ed is at this stuff. And I’m not just saying this cuz we are all buddy-buddy. You truly have to witness the presentation to fully appreciate the once in a lifetime opportunity that exists here.

Listen Up Internet Ping Pong Heads…

If you are anything like me, you got all kinds of ideas, projects, and websites scattered all over the internet. I’m kinda like a Ping Pong in a way. I know many others are even worse.

However, after carefully paying attention to Ed and his wisdom about selling websites, I’ve begun to strategize my scatterbrains into a clear vision of wealth and freedom.

Here’s why this is so huge….

If you spend any time learning about internet marketing, and if you are semi serious about this stuff, chances are, you know more then 99% of the people out there in cyberspace. There are tons and tons of website owners who have no clue about the true value of their websites.

And these guys are willing to sell for ridiculous prices that would make most weep tears. If those tears could talk, they would probably say something like….

“HOLY CRAP I CAN’T BELIEVE HE SOLD THAT FOR $1400!”

People, friends, pals,

This opportunity is absolutely massive! It may appear like I’m just trying to hype you up (after all I do possess super-human salesman powers), but the the facts are the facts.

I’ve seen some of the sites Ed sold for $5,000,000.00! Yes, Five Million Soldiers, and guess what?

Anybody could of created those sites. Anyone at all. Now, I’m guessing there are a few of you out there that have some websites that you could sell right now for a pretty penny. However, knowing how to extract maximum cash is a whole different story. Ed tells that story much better then I, so I’ll leave that up to him.

I’m hoping to do a interview with him in the next day or so, and we’ll give you guys the low-down on exactly what to expect. And hey, I’ll probably even have some goodies up my sleeve as well.

If you got any questions you would like me to ask Ed during the interview, please ask them now on the blog before I interview him.

Cheers,

J-Mo

PS: When I hear stories like the 17 year old kid selling his site, it gets me so pumped. Think of it like this folks…

Buying and selling websites is just like real estate, except it’s virtual real estate. You can reap all the profits without a single tangible item. The fact that you can sell virtual real estate, consisting of text, images, software, and intellectual property without ever having to leave the office is pretty damn groovy. More info coming very soon!

PPS: Let me know your questions about buying and selling by posting a comment. Thx!

  1. Hi Jason,

    My questions for Ed are:

I was just Google slapped in November, and my sales have tanked as a result. I’m working on building them back up, but it’s going to take some time I suspect. This is my TDC2 site, so it’s only been live about 5 months.

My instinct is that I should wait until my sales have rebounded before I try to sell it, b/c I would then get a better price for it. Is that correct?

Also, from what Ed’s podcasted, shouldn’t our sites have a year’s track record of stats for a potental buyer to evaluate?

While savvy IM’ers may want to buy at bargain basement prices, savvy sellers will want to get the most for their sites.

Thanks! Hope all is well in Moffatt-land.

Happy Holidays to you & Allison,
    Linda

  2. Hi Jason,

My question for Ed is what type of websites are people looking to buy? On what subjects?

Also what about community websites? I just recently bought the resale rights and source codes for a community video website kinda like youtube with established traffic, members, etc.

How would I go about reselling this site? I’m new to all this and don’t have experience in this area, so does Ed offer any kind of help or coaching to people to help them buy and sell websites?

    Thanks!
    Lavonne Van Dyke

  3. I have lots of sites coming along and this would be my cup of tea. Keep us all posted, Jason. Thanks for all of your great advice.
Ask Ed how long does he “age” the sites and how much traffic does he have coming? Does he buy the traffic? etc.

    Glen

  4. The blog looks…. Sweeeet dude!

Hey I thought our conversations were confidential — (just kiddin’)

Cool that you’ve given props to a young guy whose gettin it done.

    Love it!

I don’t have a question for Ed but here’s what I’d like to see.

Take a niche from the audience — impromptu — not set up — and have Ed roam around trying to find a site to buy.

I’d love to see him do that.

    Shaune

  5. Hey Jason,

You should ask Ed Dale why most of his audio and video do not play properly when I try to
watch/listen. I did not even bother with his thirty day challenge Part II because of it.

I received an email from him last week and had the same problem. His are the only ones I have problems with. I do not know if it is because he is
    a Mac Man or what.

I love him and Frank Kern(Who has been very quiet. I’m on his list)

John Reese Rocks as far as I”m concerned.
    He’s the man.

    You Rock Too.

    Sincerely,
    Dan

  6. Hi there every one!
    Check out http://www.sedo.com/main.php3?language=us
to buy and sell Domains and websites

I for myself would be interested in selling the rights, for myskillregister , to be run in other countries.
    Has any one Any ideas????
Have detected a few copy cats in different parts of the world who picked up on the idea.
It’ll be nice to catch up on these guys.
the site could be very easely copied and made suitable for other countries.

Let me hear only serious stuff, if you are interested.
    And to the young guy!
    Good on him, well done!

  7. Well, websites are cyberspace real estate. So what kind of cyber real estate is most sellable? A large authority site? A well-structured mini-net? A blog network? What niches? Business-to-business or business-to-consumer. Adsense sites? Physical products or info products? Potential or documented performance? In short, a good exploration of the market and its opportunities would be very helpful.

Next, marketing? What’s the best way to reach potential sellers and buyers? I’m assuming there’s money to be made as an intermediary as well as by making and selling sites. What does this market look like and what does it want?

As you know, you can buy websites on ebay quite inexpensively. Their quality or value is another matter. I assume this is not what Ed has in mind.

  8. Jason, hi!

Met you at 30DC conference in SD. I’m in Del Mar. You were kind to me. Thank you. (I also remember that email you wrote to your girlfriend. I hope that’s still working for you. 🙂 Happy Surfing Holidays. Mary

I have a few unoptimized Google adsense sites that I designed using Directory Generator 2 years ago that I’ve thought have sale potential.

    1. What do I need to do to prepare a website for a sale?

    2. How do you value a website?

    3. What are the levels of value when determining what a website is worth? For example: If your website has these (X,Y,Z) components, it’s worth $1K-5K, if it has these (XYZ+$) it’s worth 10K-50K, if it has these ($$$$) it’s worth $1M-5M, etc.

    4. What are the 10 most important questions to ask a website broker? A buyer?

    5. What should I NEVER do, and ABSOLUTELY must do, before I contact a broker?

    6. When is the best time to sell a website?

    7. What kind of commissions are paid to a broker?

    8. If I want to do a sale on my own, what do I need to make sure I do?

    9. Is there a standard contract I can use?

    10. What are the names of the best brokers and attorneys for this kind of transaction? (This could be a great website in its own right for someone – an online broker for website brokers!)

  9. Hey Jason,

Great to meet you at the Undies conference in Melbourne earlier this month 🙂

Hey could you ask Ed how he made contact with the buyer of his sites for $5M, Did he approach more than one and what time frame did it take to settle the deal?

    Thanks Dude!

  10. Jason, Ask Ed – If you buy a website and you don,t have the exspertise to ramp it up or to maintain the site is there anyway you that you can get people that will do this for you at reasonable cost, and are trustworthy or would it be not visiable to buy websites unless you had the skills to do this yourself

    Leonard

  11. Sorry that I missed the chance to feed Ed all of your questions. However, considering I’ve seen Ed’s presentation a few times I think I can probably answer some of these for him ( I think).

    First of all Stanley,

This actually is a perfect place for a begginer to start. Lots of people are intimidated by everything it takes to get a website up and rolling. If this is you, why not just buy a site that is already working and rolling? You’d be surprised at how cheap you can actually get in the game. So I’d say YES absolutely.

    Linda,

Ideally yes, you would like to get your sales back to normal if you want a higher selling price. Having 1 year history is ideal, but not necessarily needed. I could sell the site I made yesterday if I wanted. However, yes you are correct though that waiting it out and getting more profits in may be the best move. But if it’s just consuming your time and energy and your heart is not in it, you can always get rid of it, and start anew in an arena where you are fresh and reviatlized.

    Lavonne,

People are looking to buy and sell ALL types of sites, including community type sites. In fact, these are some of the best buys around because the owners don’t really understand the true value of their community.

For the people that purchase Ed’s seminar via my link I am offering my help to assist you in buying and selling of any website. Considering people are getting such a cheap discount on the seminar, Ed is not offering his personal assistance on the buying and selling end. That cost the first group $10,000 and you guys don’t have to pay 4/5 ths
    of that price.

    Dan,

Maybe you should follow directions and download iTunes like the rest of the group and you can get the audios and videos to play just fine. All you have to do is read the instructions.

    Nandor,

Selling your sites at a place like Sedo is plain suicide in my opinion. You can get so much more money then what you will yield there. Plus you run the risk of running into a guy like myself who will just reverse engineer your site and build it myself to save 3/4 of the price. Very risky move selling at places like this if you are concerned about maximum profit.

    Bert,

You really don’t need anything at all. Some people are willing to sell on monthly payments with no money down, and there is always to option as serving as a middle man and just finder buyers for people who have no idea how to sell their sites. Once you have this knowledge, all types of website owners will be beating down your email box if they know what you can do.

    Sandy,

all sites are fair game. However I’ll leak this little bit. Sites that use Pay Per Click for traffic have an advantage over most of the other sites. I can’t say why just here, but if you have steady PPC traffic and are profitable, it’s a breeze to make a great sale.

As far as being a middle man. You betcha. Quickest way to riches if you ask me.

    Mary,

I’m going to have to say that you ask TOO GOOD of questions. I’d like to answer those, but to be honest I’m not sure how to without revealing a ton of the good stuff Ed is going to talk about. I’m sorry.

    Scott,

I’m not sure about that, but if I get him back on the horn I’ll be sure to ask how he found the buyers.

    Leonard,

You can surely have someone do everything for you. Heck, that is true Underachieving and Ed would be proud of you for even suggesting this.

Of course you would want to bring yourself up to speed so you could co-exist with your assistants and know what they are up to, but I see nothing stopping you from implementing this at all. You would just need to keep an eye on your hired help.

As for specifics on where to get that help, I’m a bit unsure. However there are tons of marketers all around the forums that are desperately in need of any type of work.

Thanks for all the questions ya’ll.

and by the way, check out this pdf report I just did… It’s a FREE DOWNLOAD (only 7 pages)

    http://www.earthinfinity.com/ebooks/jmo-ed.pdf

  12. I said that Ed wasn’t offering assistance in a previous answer.

That is not correct. He is offering assistance, just not on the same level as the $10,000 attendees who received opportunity for Ed to help broker the
    deal.

If you read Ed’s offer, you get a skype consultation and 90 day email support.

    Cheers,

    Jmo

Even I’m excited to hear the content again,
and really pumped to be able to have it all
on tape. This is such a gem!

  13. Hi Jason
I have my own website but donno how can I make design or putting all my webs presentations.
The site still under construction since 2 months.

    Thankyou

  14. Hey everyone,

I’d just like to say I’m the 17 year old who sold my website.

Here’s a little article I wrote about it. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post links here, but what the heck:

    http://www.realitycopywriting.com/ezine/ecolumn-2006/december/12.htm

Thanks heaps for mentioning me in your blog Jason.

I don’t really want to say exactly how much I sold it for, but yeah, it was a few thousand dollars. I probably could have got a lot more, but hey, that’s a lot of money for me.

Hopefully it’s just the beginning of bigger and better things.

Thanks, and godd luck to eveyone with your own online ventures,

    Matthew

  15. Hey Matthew,

thanks for stopping by. Yeah, I didn’t want to disclose much about it, so thanks for sharing that with us.

Don’t spend all your loot in one place!

    Cheers!
