Marketing Is Like Football: Master This Psychological Rule and Watch Your Sales Explode!

Think the Chiefs Get All the Calls From The Refs?

Here’s why that’s one of the best marketing lessons you’ll ever learn...

Years ago, I used to hang in Tijuana, Mexico, at a swanky sportsbook called Caliente.

On one particular Sunday morning, I saw something that changed how I looked at people, which really helped in sales and marketing.

A football game was on, and the referee made a call that drove the fans bat shit crazy.

They were convinced he got the call wrong.

But when the replay came up, it was clear as day, the referee made the right call.

No question about it.

And yet… the fans still insisted he was wrong.

It was a huge wake-up call and made me realize...

People don’t always see what’s real.

They see what they want to see.

Fast forward to today...

The Super Bowl.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Philadelphia Eagles.

And once again, people are saying...

“The refs favor the Chiefs!”

But is that really true?

Or is it just that when a call goes against your team, it feels unfair?

This is not just football.

It’s human nature.

And for those of us in sales and marketing, it’s a golden insight.

Trying to change someone's mind with facts alone is a losing battle.

If they’ve already decided, they’ll twist any new information to confirm what they already believe.

So what do we do instead?

Simple.

We don’t fight against their beliefs.

We align with them.

Instead of convincing someone to see things our way, we present our offer in a way that already fits into the story they believe about themselves.

People don’t buy “weight loss programs.”

They buy the story of “finally being in control.”

They don’t buy “financial freedom.”

They buy the story of “proving everyone wrong who doubted them.”

They don’t buy “a marketing course.”

They buy the story of “becoming a rainmaker who never worries about money again.”

So next time you’re selling something, don’t waste your breath arguing with the refs.

Find the story your audience already believes and make your offer the obvious next step in that journey.

That’s how you win.

So, who do you think is going to win the big game today?

And be honest…

Do you really believe the refs favor Kansas City, or do you just want to believe it?
