I was chatting with my buddy Matt the other day and he asked if I’d ever taken a Kolbe A Index Assessment? I replied no. The truth is, I’d never even heard of the test before. If you too are unfamiliar, The Kolbe Index is a instinct assessment and it helps you to discover your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to work, motivation and problem solving.
The exact verbiage from the website says…
Kolbe Indexes are fun and easy to complete online in less than 20 minutes. Backed by more than 30 years or research and practical applications, they provide an amazingly accurate map of an individual’s natural instincts, or modus operandi (MO).
I took the test (which costs about $50) online and it was painless and easy. The results were just about what I expected. Nothing really new for me jumped out, but I reckon that is because I’m pretty aware of my strengths and weaknesses through much self evaluation over the years. However, it was reassuring to read the results and find out where I should be devoting most of my time and energy.
My score came out as a 5194. For those of you that have no idea what that means, you can read my assessment in the link below. I kind of enjoy having 2 middle of the road scores with the 5 and 4, but also am embracing the drastic high and low of the 1 and 9 score. To understand what I’m talking about you might need to read my assessment.
One thing I enjoyed about the test was that it doesn’t try to correct you or penalize you for your lack of interest in certain areas of achievement. It simply recognizes where your strengths are and encourages you to excel in those areas of your life while understanding your weaknesses as well. It makes little sense to try and work on your weaknesses all the time when instead you could be playing to your strengths.
Where I see the Kolbe A Index Assessment being incredibly important is with hiring new employees. Sticking a new employee in the wrong spot can be a disaster and a big time money loss if don’t position them wisely. You not only miss out on loss productivity with a mis-hire, but you also lose out on potential growth at the same time. It’s like a double whammy. Hiring the wrong people can set your company back big time, so the Kolbe Index assessment is something I strongly encourage employers to use before delegating a position to a new employee.
