So, I admitted defeat and borrowed enough money to get a Greyhound bus ticket back to my hometown of Portland Oregon.
I felt so insanely worthless and emasculated in that moment. Never in my life had I sank this low.
When I finally arrived in Portland, I was actually homeless for the first time in my life.
Thankfully, I had a few friends who let me crash on their couch until I was able to get back on my feet.
Within a few days, I went to the library and got on the internet. I placed a classified ad on Craigslist looking for a place to rent.
However, without any money in my pocket, I didn't have too many options.
All I had was my ability to write an ad and plea with a stranger to take a chance on me.
I needed to find someone who was willing to work with me and sympathized with my story.
Thankfully, The Words In
My Classified Ad Got Me A Lead!
A guy living up on Mt. Hood had this dingy old A-frame cabin in the woods.
He said he'd be willing to rent it out to me for $200 a month.
He cautioned that it was full of crap and needed to be cleaned out, but if I was willing to clean it out, he'd wave the first months rent.
Considering I had no other options, I didn't have much of a choice, so I said yes.
Not only was the cabin small and dingy, it didn't have running water, a kitchen, or even a bathroom.
As you can see below, I had to build a make shift outhouse just to have a bathroom...
However, The Cabin Did Have 3 Crucial
Things That Forever Changed My Life...
The first thing it had was a wood stove. Now I could stay warm as long as I was willing to cut firewood. It also had electricity.
If you look at the cedar tree to the left of the outhouse, you can see the electric meter mounted to the side of the tree.
Right below the meter, you can see the third thing, a little grey boxed that housed a phone line.
That phone line became my very first dial up internet connection.
I didn't have much, but I was very thankful and blessed for the little I did have.
And truth be told, it was pretty awesome to eat over a campfire and bathe in the river on some days.
The fall from grace gave me a lot of perspective and it was a peaceful place to start rebuilding my life.
Within a few weeks of doing odd jobs for a local contractor buddy, I was able to get a truck and a computer.
For the first time in my life, I was on the world wide web.
I got my first email address and started building a website with the Verizon web builder.
My website address was something super ugly like... myverizonsite.9392jsaxlwd.com.
For the first few months, I was making a few bucks flipping things on Craigslist and eBay.
I'd scour the free section on Craigslist and pick up random odds and ends, and then resell them back on Craigslist or eBay.
It wasn't anything to brag about, but it kept food in my belly and paid the cheap rent.
Then One Day, I Had An Idea...
I knew the guy who rented me the cabin was a wheeler and dealer himself and he was always looking for some extra cash.
So, I wrote him a compelling letter asking if he'd be willing to sell me the A-frame cabin and the land it was located on.
The only problem was, I didn't have any sort of down payment to make the deal very attractive to him.
My only leverage would be a higher monthly mortgage he'd receive compared to the $200 rent.
So, I wrote him a letter and proposed the deal and to my delight... HE ACCEPTED!
We ended up agreeing on $45,000 for the cabin and the land it was located on.
All the sudden, my $200 a month rent payment went up to a $550 mortgage payment.
Slowly but surely, I was beginning to rebuild my life.
A week later, I came home one evening and there were...
A Dozen Cops In My Driveway
At first, I thought I was busted for the small marijuana grow I had in the attic of the A-frame.
It wasn't yet legal in Oregon and I thought for sure I was screwed.
Turns out, the cops being there had nothing to do with me. Thank God.
There was a domestic violence call to the neighbors house and someone ended up getting shot over $40 worth of speed. Classic tweeker shit.
One guy was arrested and the other taken to the hospital.
A few days after the shooting, I got a call from my best friend Lloyd who is a private detective down in the city.
Since he lived an hour away from the mountain in Portland, he asked me if I could help him locate an owner of a cabin up on the mountain.
Apparently, he had picked up a new case and was investigating a domestic violence shooting.
That's when I said...

That Shooting Happened Next Door To Me!"
Lloyd needed permission to go inside the house and snap a few photos for his client and he asked me if I could help get in touch with the owner.
I asked a few neighbors and tracked down the owner and got permission to enter the home.
Being curious myself, I tagged along when Lloyd went inside to take the photos.
The house was a custom log cabin hand built by legendary mountain man William John Lenz sometime in the early 1930's.
It was a bit rough looking on the outside, but the inside was super cool with all kinds of custom woodwork.
It also had a massive amount of blood staining the carpet and the floors. The place was pretty trashed from the drug riddled tenants who had rented the place for years.
Seeing how the place had deteriorated...
I Had Another One Of Those Ideas...
I wrote the owner of the home a letter and proposed that he sell me the house on a rent to own contract.
Once again, I was in no position to buy this house but I didn't let that stop me from writing the most compelling letter as humanly possible.
In that letter, I told the owner that I would completely clean out and fix up the home if he gave me 6 months of free rent. Then afterward, we could draw up a purchase contract for the home.
To my delight, he agreed.
Just a few months prior, I had been homeless with no money, and here I was a short time later owning two homes.
A few years later, I actually bought another one of the neighbors homes by writing another compelling letter.
